Note: This drawing is now closed. A lot of the work I do is solo. I sit at my desk typing emails, editing manuscripts, reviewing layouts, and more. It suits well my introverted side. The photo shoots I art direct are entirely different. On set things are sometimes loud, occasionally stressful, always very creative, and most of all, it's a team effort. The photo shoot for Ellie Krieger'samazing new book, Weeknight Wonders, was no exception.Photographer Quentin Bacon shoots fast too, so everyone is often racing to keep up. The results are really exciting. The book was just published, and I encourage you to check it out for yourself if you want to see the beautiful photos Quentin took. Here are some behind the scenes photos, all just my own snapshots. But even here you can see how great everything looked. (By the way, if you're actually reading this post and want to be entered into a drawing for a free copy of the book, and you live in the U.S. or Canada, just post a comment below.)Besides of course Quentin, the first credit for the beautiful photos goes to food stylist Suzanne Lenzer. This was my first time working with her, and it was such a pleasure. Suzanne has such a great eye for details, and she never gets flustered when we need something adjusted.Working with ingredients like bread crumbs would drive me insane on a photoshoot. You want them to look messy and natural, but not TOO messy and natural because the photo still has to be pretty.And something like this recipe would be so easy for an amateur to do wrong. The taco pizzas look so delicious, but the ingredients are just, well, challenging. Suzanne made everything look mouthwatering and pretty.The nice thing about working with a photographer like Quentin Bacon is that he's not afraid to move things around himself on set. But of course we had a real prop stylist to do most of the work -- selecting the props before the shoot, coming up with a color palate, and choosing props for each shot or working with the food stylist to figure out what would be just right.Maeve Sheridan was the prop stylist, and it was my first time working with her too. What a pleasure. Maeve brings a calm to the shoot in a way I don't see too often. I'm not sure if she always did this for a living, but I think this kind of work suits her very well.The thing I admire most about prop stylists, especially Maeve, is their sense of color. I'm not color blind, but color just isn't my thing. Maeve matched linens and food so well, my snapshots all look so much better than anything I could take myself at home. Well, and of course Suzanne's food styling was perfect.I already mentioned that these are just my snapshots from behind the scenes at the shoot. Ellie was there too, helping all along the way.
